Nurture and nature and the two foundational themes in understanding our human psychology. Nurture refers to the role of beliefs we take on about ourselves and the world often from what is role modelled to us as a child. Core foundational become our data bases and the lens we see ourselves and the world through. On the other hand Nature refers to our personality. Personality is liked to our genetices and can be defined by as,
“A complex set of psychological qualities that influence an individual’s characteristic pattern of behaviour across situations and over time” by Gerrig & Zimbardo (2012)
There are many different ways of looking at personality and one of the most helpful I find is the Enneagram. The Enneagram is a way to understand the human psyche through a system of nine interconnected personality types. The Enneagram helps us to see ourselves at a deeper, more objective level and can be of invaluable support to identify and heal fears and unhealthy patterns and dynamics on our path to self awareness and self-knowledge and empowerment. The Enneagram Institute formed by Russ Hudson and the late Don Riso is a great resource in understanding your personality. On the site you are able to profile your personality and come to understand the core fears in your persona.
When we understand the core fears we are able to begin to process and release the influence they have in our lives often subconsciously and make room for heathier ways of viewing the self and fostering the innate qualities of Being
After we release the fears in our personality we are able to begin to embody our innate qualities or Essence of Being!
